You might think that doing work experience means you’ll just sit there twiddling your thumbs, or be given a ton of envelopes to stuff, stamp and send. But you’re wrong!
Gaining work experience is really important. It can give you the opportunity to take on some really interesting and challenging responsibilities and introduce you into the world of work!
You’re also more likely to be successful in your job hunt if you’ve done some good work experience, and that’s a fact!
Also, if you’re not sure what career you want to do, work experience is a great way to sample all the various career options out there. It’s a way of exploring different jobs without actually committing to anything. You can dip your toe in the water without taking the full plunge.
It’s also a great way to get a real sense of your chosen industry. You’ll get to speak to employees and ask them questions. Doing work experience shows passion and interest. Doing work experience can show an employer that you are motivated to get into a chosen career and that you’ve done your homework.

Penguin run year-round paid work experience slots of two weeks, where you’d be shadowing a team and getting to grips with day-to-day life in publishing. HSBC run a one week UK work experience programme for students looking for a placement within a banking enviroment. The work experince programme provides opportunities to gain some hands-on experience, develop your knowledge of banking and financial services, and explore the careers available at HSBC in the UK. The Brighton Grand offers work experience working in one of their operational departments, including kitchen, food and beverage service, front of house, and spa.
